LET IT GO? You sound just like him" His brothers won't return his calls He's got a whole museum dedicated to the fall I love him but I'm sitting here at two AM While he's writing angry letters to his dad — again [Pre-Chorus — Operatic, but slightly less convinced this time] And ohhhh, that fire in his soul And ohhhh, he makes me feel so whole But he's been cast out for so long I wonder if he even remembers What he's fighting for [Chorus] Daddy issues, baby (ohhhh) Got that heaven-and-hell divide Daddy issues, maybe (ohhhh) That's why I'm standing by his side He's fighting God, he's cursing fate Three thousand years and he can't let it go My man's got daddy issues And I'm starting to wonder if I should've known [Operatic Interlude] [Classical soprano, full orchestral strings, church organ] Pater non approbat, Vocat me tenebras, Non sum digna caelo, Non sum digna filio. Sed ego amo eum, Per ignem et exsilium, Si pax inter vos numquam erit — Numquam ero familia. [Interlude] [Instrumental] [Bridge — Operatic, full drama, she confronts the truth] He asked me once If I thought he was the villain I said no, my love They were killing, and you asked why But there's a difference between A rebel and a wound And you, my morning star Have been bleeding since the beginning I can love you through the fire I can stand beside the fall But I cannot be your heaven If you're still at war with God [Final Chorus — Hip hop and operatic together, resigned but warm] Daddy issues, baby (ohhhh) I knew it from the start Daddy issues, maybe (ohhhh) That's why he broke my heart He's still fighting heaven He's still cursing fate Three thousand years and he won't let it go My man's got daddy issues Oh honey, I should've known My man's got daddy issues And he'll never quite come home [Outro — Quiet, a little amused, a little sad] [Instrumental fade] So if you're dating someone Who got cast out of paradise Just know the first red flag Is everything he said about his dad at night Bless his heart He's still so beautiful when he rages at the sky Daddy issues, baby At least now I know why ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A Hip Hopera comedy-drama told from the perspective of Lucifer's girlfriend — a woman slowly realizing that her magnificent, smoldering, fallen-angel boyfriend has never gotten over being cast out of heaven. Blending grounded hip hop verses (the red flags, the reality checks) with sweeping operatic pre-choruses (the moments she forgets all of that because he's just so dramatic and beautiful), the song builds from infatuation through doubt to a bittersweet acceptance. A spiritual sequel to "The First Disagreement" — same event, entirely different perspective. Heaven and Hell as a family drama; Lucifer as a man who is still, millennia later, absolutely not over it.
