14. The Three Spinners Dance Tonight (Folk)
In a cottage by the meadow, Where the spinning wheels all sigh, Lived a maiden with a secret, And a worry growing high… Her mother scolded sharply, “Spin the flax, don’t be so slow!” But the girl could never manage, And her tears began to flow. Then the queen came by and noticed What a “gifted spinner” she must be— So she carried her to the palace, Promised gold and royalty. **Oh, the spindle turns, the wheel goes ’round, A fairy tale in thread and sound! Three strange spinners in the night, Bring a blessing wrapped in light. When work seems heavy, shadows loom— Kindness always breaks the gloom!** In the chamber full of flaxen, She stood trembling in despair, ’Til three women strange and ancient Softly shuffled from nowhere. One had lips as red as berries, One had fingers long and thin, One had feet so broad and heavy— Yet they smiled and welcomed her in. “Share your food and share your kindness, Let your heart be warm and true. We will spin this flax to gold, And the queen will honor you.” So they hummed their ancient rhythm, As the wheel began to fly— Threads of magic filled the moonlight, Shining bright against the sky. When the prince came forth to meet her, Saw her gentle, honest grace, He loved her more than jewels or linen, More than beauty in her face. But the spinners at the wedding Showed their lips, their feet, their hands— And he vowed she’d never labor, Never spin by his command! **Oh, the spindle turns, the wheel goes ’round, A fairy tale in thread and sound! Three strange spinners in the night, Bring a blessing wrapped in light. When work seems heavy, shadows loom— Kindness always breaks the gloom!** So remember in life’s weaving, Every thread can turn out right— If you meet the three good spinners On a starlit Celtic night…
