Half a street stops breathing Curtains move like tides Blue light washes over brickwork And all the little lives inside A man pauses at his sink With shaving foam still on his face A teenager lowers her headphones As sirens cut across the bass The traffic freezes mid-thought Red lights bloom across the rain Nobody knows the story Yet everybody feels the weight For thirty seconds The city belongs To a stranger Nobody knows Ambulance lights Painting halos on the concrete Turning ordinary windows Into altars for a moment Ambulance lights Crossing over sleeping rooftops Making witnesses of people Who were never meant to meet Tonight Tonight Third floor nurse by the radiator Already carrying too much Looks out and says a silent prayer Without believing very much A child asks his father questions The kind that don't have easy shapes The father stares into the distance Trying to find a safer way To explain how fragile everything is Without saying the words aloud How a life can split in half While another walks right past the crowd And all these separate planets Briefly share the same sky A thousand private stories Held beneath one passing light Ambulance lights Painting halos on the concrete Turning ordinary windows Into altars for a moment Ambulance lights Crossing over sleeping rooftops Making witnesses of people Who were never meant to meet Tonight Tonight There is a woman watering plants at midnight A taxi driver three hours from going home A couple in the middle of an argument A student rewriting the same sentence An old man unable to sleep A nurse unable to forget And for a moment Every one of them looks in the same direction The sirens disappear But nobody returns unchanged The silence afterward Feels larger than before Because every passing emergency Leaves something behind Not answers Just reminders Tomorrow Most of us will forget The colour of the lights The exact shape of the sound But not the feeling Not that feeling Ambulance lights Moving through the dark like rivers Carrying someone's whole world Between one address and another Ambulance lights Briefly stitching us together Every window Every heartbeat Every stranger Underneath the same sky Ambulance lights Ambulance lights Ambulance lights Somewhere tonight Someone made it home
