Back to Hadrian’s Stone (Remastered)

V6

“Back to Hadrian’s Stone” Verse 1 Before the wall, before the kings Before the southern eagle’s wings The northern fires burned through rain And named no Caesar, bowed no chain From Caithness winds to mountain black The clans rode where the frost struck back No marble road, no empire’s claim Could cage the north or bind its name Verse 2 Then south there rose the Roman line A wall of stone, a bold design At Hadrian’s edge they raised their shield Declared the wild at last would yield But every tower watched in fear For drums of painted men drew near The mist concealed the hidden bands With ash and spear in frozen hands Verse 3 They drove us north with iron weight To Antonine’s advancing gate The banners climbed the northern hill Yet Caledonia stood there still No emperor could hold that land Too cold for law, too sharp for hand Each burned fort told the same old tale The north bends hard—but does not fail Verse 4 Through forest dark and bogland deep The mountain sons forgot not grief They struck at dusk and vanished fast Left broken standards in the grass The eagle searched but found no throne No city walls to claim as own Only the cry through winter’s sky— “You cross our earth, and here you die.” Verse 5 Then came the turning of the tide The Roman ranks were split and wide Their northern wall became their grave Against the clans they could not save Step after step the legions broke Through rain and pine and battle smoke Until retreat became command And south they marched from stolen land Verse 6 Back to Hadrian’s ancient stone The empire stood—but stood alone Their second wall abandoned cold Its victories already old And in the glens the stories grew Of painted warriors passing through Their blood remembered, carried on When Roman names themselves were gone Verse 7 The elders spoke by fading flame That future clans would bear the name The wolf of north, the sea-born cry Would never kneel and never die From hidden roots through centuries Through storm and war and northern seas The old resistance still would stay Until the banners called MacKay Verse 8 So raise no crown above the hills No empire outlives northern wills The stones still stand, but winds decide Who truly held the northern side And when the winter stars burn bright You hear the old drums in the night Not Rome—but voices carried far Of Caledonia as they are
