Maybe I'm Already On My Way
# MAYBE I'M ALREADY ON MY WAY [Intro – male, close mic, half-spoken] Missed the train. Again. [Small breath.] Fine. I'll get the next one. --- [Verse 1 – conversational, lightly rhythmic] Bought a coffee from the place by the station, lid doesn't fit, so now my hand is wet. Guy beside me drops a handful of coins, we both kneel down and start picking them up. He says, “Thanks.” I say, “No problem.” Never seen him before. There's a little girl by the ticket machine trying to feed a pigeon with half a biscuit. Her mum keeps saying, “Leave it.” She doesn't. I don't blame her. --- [Pre-Chorus – sung, gentle lift] I was trying to get somewhere. Didn't even know where. Then I looked up... and realised I was already here. --- [Chorus – simple, memorable, warm] Maybe I'm already on my way, maybe I don't need to know the end. Maybe all these little things are taking me somewhere I haven't seen yet. I've been looking for a sign while standing in the light. Maybe I'm already on my way... Maybe I'm alright. --- [Verse 2 – more animated, natural] The next train's delayed. Twenty minutes. Someone swears at the screen. Someone laughs. Someone's sharing chips with a dog outside the station shop. I used to hate this sort of thing. Now I'm watching. There's a crease in the poster on the wall where somebody's circled one small word. “Tomorrow.” [Pause.] Funny. That feels about right. --- [Pre-Chorus 2 – slightly more open] I kept thinking I was falling behind. Maybe I was just moving in a direction I couldn't see. --- [Chorus – wider, still restrained] Maybe I'm already on my way, maybe I don't need to know the end. Maybe all these little things are taking me somewhere I haven't seen yet. I've been looking for a sign while standing in the light. Maybe I'm already on my way... Maybe I'm alright. --- [Bridge – stripped, reflective, almost spoken] I found Mum's old note behind the toaster. I was looking for a clean mug. [Small laugh.] “Stop rushing.” That's all it said. Two words. I stood there for ages. Then I left it where it was. --- [Final Chorus – warmer, fuller through harmony] Maybe I'm already on my way, even when I take the longer road. Maybe I don't have to have it figured out to know I'm not alone. I've spent so much time searching for the person I'm meant to be. Maybe I'm already on my way... Maybe I'm becoming me. [Soft harmony] Already becoming me... --- [Outro – intimate] Train pulled in. I let it go. [Pause.] For once... I wasn't late. [Soft breath.] Maybe I'm already on my way home.
