WORK IN PROGRESS

[Constraints: no southern drawl, no country twang, neutral accent, clear and precise consonants, Indie pop, neutral American vocals, clear diction... polished production, no twang, no accent] I’m back on my knees again this morning Same old floor, same kind of prayer Asking for forgiveness, asking for patience Like I didn’t just waste it somewhere I said I’d be slower, said I’d be better Said I’d hold my temper tight But I spoke too fast, let the moment win And I’m here again tonight I know I don’t change in a moment I know good intentions don’t last So I’m learning to ask for tomorrow Not pretending I’ve outrun my past I’m a work in progress, I always have been Still learning where I end and where grace steps in I fall down easy, I get back slow But I’m trying to trust You more than I know Yeah, I’m a work in progress And I’m still leaning on hope I say the wrong thing when I feel tired Let the anger talk before I think I hurt the ones who stand beside me With words I don’t really mean I don’t want to be the man who’s always sorry But never the man who learns So I’m praying for patience with myself While the hard lessons burn I can’t do this by myself I’ve tried and I know how that goes So I’m asking for help with the in-between The parts of me You already know I’m a work in progress, I always have been Still learning where I end and where grace steps in I fall down easy, I get back slow But I’m trying to trust You more than I know Yeah, I’m a work in progress And I’m still leaning on hope Jesus, You give me more grace than I deserve More than the promises I’ve broken or words I’ve burned I’ll probably be back here asking again So teach me patience — with myself, and then Help me be better for my family Help me be honest with my friends Help me be light in the world around me Even if I stumble again I’m a work in progress, that much is true But I’m not walking alone, I’m walking with You I fall down easy, I get back slow But I’m learning to lean where the mercy flows Yeah, I’m a work in progress And I’m still learning to hope Still on my knees, but I’m not alone One step forward, one step home
