I was countin’ lines on that old highway Same song on, different kinda heartache Lookin’ back like it held the answers But memories ain’t nothin’ but dancers Spinnin’ me ‘round in yesterday’s shoes Til I damn near missed the morning’s new [Chorus] You might miss what’s ahead of you If you keep concentratin’ on that rear view Every mile gone is a lesson, not a tether The past was a teacher, but it ain’t the weather Don’t let what’s behind steer what’s near You’ll never find tomorrow back there [Verse 2] My granddad said, “Boy, roads don’t rewind” “Every scar you earn just proves you survived” Said, “Don’t chase ghosts that already left” “You can’t drive forward holdin’ your breath” Life ain’t waitin’ in a photograph It’s up ahead, not in the past [Chorus] You might miss what’s ahead of you If you keep concentratin’ on that rear view Every mile gone is a lesson, not a tether The past was a teacher, but it ain’t the weather Don’t let what’s behind steer what’s near You’ll never find tomorrow back there [Bridge] Let the windshield be your guide Not the things you left behind ’Cause freedom rides in the open air Not in broken dreams and midnight prayers [Verse 3] So I shifted gears, let go of blame Turned my regrets into a different flame Now I chase sunrises, not old fears Livin’ wide-eyed with a steady steer [Final Chorus] You might miss what’s ahead of you If you keep concentratin’ on that rear view Every mile gone is a lesson, not a tether The past was a teacher, but it ain’t the weather Don’t let what’s behind steer what’s near You’ll never find tomorrow back there [Outro Line] Keep your eyes on the road, and your hands in prayer
