The Oat Brick.

Citizens. Put down the sponge cake. It is air. It is frivolous. Today, we build. We are making... The Flapjack. The fuel of the Empire. First, the Oats. Do not bring me "Instant Porridge," that is dust... that is defeat... We need Jumbo Oats.... specifically, Rolled Oats... We must have structural integrity... They are the bricks of this operation. The Mortar... Butter, Brown Sugar... and... Golden Syrup... The Trinity of Adhesion... Melt them gently together... but... Do not boil it into toffee... yet... We want... a golden river. Pour the oats into this sacred river... Stir... use your muscles, you are mixing a gloriously heavy cement... Coat every single grain.... If you leave a dry oat... you have left a weak link in the chain. Press it into the tray... Pack it down hard... We are not making a duvet... We are making a road surface... We intend to fill in the pot hole... and repair our soul. The Bake. Golden brown, the colour of kings... Observe it bubbling at the edges... Now... listen to me very carefully... Do. Not. Touch. It. That bubbling sugar is Napalm... It is Culinary Lava... If you stick your finger in to "taste"... you will lose the fingerprint... it will hurt.... And I will not pity you. The Cut... This is where the amateur fails... You must cut it while it is warm... Score the lines... Define the squares... If you wait until it is cold... it becomes Granite. You will need a chisel, you will break the plate.... And you will hang your head in shame... If you cut too soon... it falls apart... and you will feel my disappointment. Patience... Precision... Wait for the "Chewy Goldilocks Zone," then cut. Let it cool... completely. Pick it up. It should be heavy. It should bend... just slightly... before it snaps. Eat it... Feel the fortification. Carry on.
