FRANK 001 – Letters to Margaret Saville | Frankenstein

(Verse 1) From frozen Petersburg he writes towards the shore, Of paths no living traveller has ever crossed before. To Margaret he entrusts the hunger in his name, A northern dream of knowledge, fellowship, and fame. (Verse 2) In Archangel he gathers men and timber for the sea, And sees beyond the winter gates a world yet to be free. Yet no companion shares the thoughts his letters send, For glory cannot answer like the counsel of a friend. (Chorus) He turns his vessel northward where the silent waters gleam, And stakes his life and future on the splendour of a dream. He seeks the hidden country where no mortal flag has flown, But dreads the polar darkness he may have to face alone. (Verse 3) He dreams the frozen heavens hold a paradise of light, Where undiscovered wonders wait beyond the longest night. The compass and the northern winds have summoned him to start, While visions of immortal deeds lie burning in his heart. (Verse 4) He promises his sister that his judgement will remain, Though every mile of ice may test the courage of his brain. He speaks as though the human will can conquer frost and stone, Yet every page betrays the need for one heart like his own. (Chorus) He turns his vessel northward where the silent waters gleam, And stakes his life and future on the splendour of a dream. He seeks the hidden country where no mortal flag has flown, But dreads the polar darkness he may have to face alone. (Bridge) His sister reads the distance in the longing of his eyes, The dangerous devotion dressed as noble enterprise. Before the ice can answer what no map has answered yet, His words preserve the warning he has not begun to get. (Outro) So northward sails the dreamer through the whitening of the night, Still chasing human glory through the wilderness of light. His letters cross behind him as the known horizons cease, While somewhere in the frozen dark another seeks release.
