[PROLOGUE] [JILL]: (Electric bass alone; low funky riff, two clipped notes, a slide, then a deliberate rest.) ROXI: (Spoken smoky alto; amused.) Oh no. She found that groove again. [INTRO] [MILFRED]: (Dry kick, snare and ghost notes; relaxed funk pocket.) [SEPHYR-GLEN]: (Rhodes and light clavinet answer Jill’s rhythm.) [LIZ]: (Harmonica gives one short bluesy wink.) ROXI: (Electric guitar joins with bright muted chords.) [VERSE 1] ROXI: (Light melodic singing.) Jill walks in like nothing happened, bass hanging low and cool. One little note behind the beat and suddenly I lose the rule. She doesn't say, "Look over here." She doesn't have to try. She just lets that low string tumble and my clever words walk by. [JILL]: (Bass answers with a tiny upward slide and stops dead.) See? That. Exactly that. [CHORUS] ROXI: (Bright, singable hook.) Jill, quit teasing the singer, you know what that bass can do. One note late, one note early, then you leave me hanging too. I'm trying to sing about everything— the stars, the soul, the sky— then Jill goes funky in the corner and there goes my serious line. [VERSE 2] [MILFRED]: (Pocket tightens; snare stays soft and dry.) [JILL]: (Bass becomes more syncopated, leaving playful gaps.) ROXI: (Half-sung, smiling.) She isn't saving anybody. She isn't proving a thing. She's just jamming with the drummer and making the whole room swing. No grand mysterious symbol, no secret cosmic clue. Sometimes a bass is just a bass— and sometimes Jill plays it at you. [LIZ]: (Harmonica answers with three cheeky notes.) [KIND RAP] [SEPHYR-GLEN]: (Clavinet locks into Jill’s groove.) ROXI: (Warm rhythmic speech; playful.) Okay Jill, I had a perfectly sensible sentence. Had nouns. Had verbs. Had philosophical intentions. Then you hit that low note— pause— little slide— and suddenly my argument has wandered outside. Not your fault. Well... mostly your fault. But keep going. You don't need fireworks. You don't need a pose. You just move one accent and everybody knows. Funk doesn't knock politely. It walks straight through the door, sets one groove down on the carpet and asks for nothing more. [BREAK] [JILL]: (Short bass feature; deep fingerstyle groove, muted sixteenths, one melodic fill, then a long rest.) ROXI: (Laughing softly.) Show-off. [JILL]: (One very low note.) ...Do it again. [BRIDGE] ROXI: (Tender melody over Rhodes.) Maybe that's the nicest thing: nothing here must win. No one has to own the room for everybody to fit in. Jill can chase the pocket. I can miss a word or two. Milfred keeps us moving, and the song knows what to do. [FINAL CHORUS] ROXI: (Full warm alto; cheerful.) Jill, keep teasing the singer, I know what that bass can do. One note late, one note early, leave a little daylight too. I was going to explain the universe— honestly, I would have tried— but Jill got funky in the corner, so the universe can wait outside. [OUTRO] [JILL]: (Returns to opening bass riff, softer and slower.) ROXI: (Electric guitar answers with one bright chord.) [LIZ]: (Harmonica gives a final tiny reply.) ROXI: (Spoken, affectionate.) Fine. You win the groove. I keep the microphone. [END]
