Checked Every Box But Love

V6

[Spoken Intro] I went to the temple today. First thing—check the boxes. Nothing wrong with boxes. I just wondered whether my heart has them too. [Verse 1] Temple attendance? Check. Scriptures and prayer? Check. Tithing paid and calling done? Check, check, check. My calendar looked righteous, My record looked complete, But did I see the lonely soul I passed along the street? [Chorus] I checked every box but love, Kept everything so neat, But Jesus was still waiting In the people I would meet. The ordinance points upward, But the path is mine to walk; Did I only mark the boxes, Or did I hear Him talk? [Verse 2] Patience with my family? Mercy when I’m right? Forgiving Brother So-and-so? Those boxes stayed snow-white. The temple taught of holiness, Of giving all to Him; The question isn’t only, “Did I go?” But, “What did I become?” [Final Chorus] Keep the prayer and temple, Keep each covenant true, But let the things we promise there Come home in what we do. A checklist may remind me, But it cannot change my heart. I checked every box but love— Lord, that’s where I need to start. [Spoken Outro] Temple attendance? Check. Taking the temple home? Still working on that one.
