RADIO STATION 11:11 S2E 1: “The Child on the Radio”
[INTRO - SOFT RADIO STATIC, DISTANT PIANO] [Clock ticking] 11:11… [Phone rings] [Click] CHILD: Is this Radio Station 11:11? DJ: Who gave you this number? CHILD: You did. [Static] DJ: What’s your name? CHILD: You know my name. [Silence] CHILD: You just don’t remember yet. [LOW ELECTRONIC PULSE] [VERSE 1] There’s a little voice inside the radio Small enough to sound like yesterday Saying things nobody ever told me Calling me by names I threw away I asked the child where they were calling from They said, “Somewhere you haven’t been” I asked them what they wanted from me They said, “I only want to let you in” [PRE-CHORUS] Then I heard a door close Somewhere in the static I heard footsteps on a wooden floor And underneath the breathing Someone started laughing A voice I’ve heard a thousand times before [CHORUS] There’s a child on the radio Calling from a place I cannot see Saying, “Don’t be afraid of me I’m the part of you you left behind” There’s a child on the radio And somehow they know everything They know the woman They know the photograph They know what 11:11 means [POST-CHORUS] Who are you? Who are you? [Child, softly:] You know. [VERSE 2] The child said, “Look beneath the station” So I pulled the old floorboard away There was a box beneath the dust With a photograph from yesterday Inside was a little silver key And a note written in my handwriting It said: “Don’t open the red door Until the child calls.” [Music drops] DJ: There’s no red door here. CHILD: There wasn’t yesterday. [Beat] CHILD: There is now. [BEAT RETURNS] [PRE-CHORUS] I heard something knocking Three times in the distance Then the hallway lights began to shake The clock stopped moving The radio went silent And something whispered: VOICE: You made a mistake. [CHORUS] There’s a child on the radio Calling from a place I cannot see Saying, “Don’t be afraid of me I’m the part of you you left behind” There’s a child on the radio And somehow they know everything They know the woman They know the photograph They know what 11:11 means [BRIDGE - MINIMAL PIANO AND STATIC] DJ: Are you a boy or a girl? CHILD: Does it matter? DJ: How old are you? CHILD: Old enough to remember. DJ: Remember what? CHILD: The first time you disappeared. [Silence] DJ: I never disappeared. CHILD: You did. DJ: When? CHILD: Tomorrow. [STATIC CRACKLES] DJ: Who are you? CHILD: I’m the reason you came back. DJ: From where? CHILD: The end. [DEEP BASS DROP] [FINAL CHORUS] There’s a child on the radio And now I hear another voice A woman crying in the background Saying, “You still have a choice” There’s a child on the radio And they’re counting down again Ten… Nine… Eight… And suddenly I realize… The countdown isn’t starting. It’s ending. [FINAL REFRAIN] Seven… Six… Five… The radio starts to shake Four… Three… Two… The child begins to whisper: CHILD: When it reaches one… You’ll remember me. [Silence] CHILD: Because you were there when I was born. [OUTRO - CLOCK TICKING] One… [LOUD STATIC] [The clock stops] [Whisper:] Welcome back. [CLICK] [END]
