Until that day comes, I want us to live with a smile." It was when I was sixteen. ...Father had been growing weaker and weaker. Father hadn't been well for several years by then. So I had taken it upon myself to look after the rice fields. Then one day, Father collapsed. Everyone in the village hurried to carry him back home, and all of us desperately kept calling out to him. I wondered if maybe he would never open his eyes again. But thankfully, he regained consciousness one more time. I felt a little relieved... But his eyes were distant as he quietly murmured something. "I don't have much time left. I'm leaving the rice fields to you." Those words quietly... went straight to my heart. All I could say was, "I understand." ...Was I crying when I said it? Even so, I'm glad I got to hear Father's final words. And then Father quietly breathed his last. I was sad too, but my little sister cried even more. Mother was grieving too. Maybe that's why I thought... I have to be the strong one now. After that, Mother gradually began to lose her strength too. Before long, she could no longer leave her bed. Father and Mother were both getting on in years... Maybe I'd always known that someday this day would come. What did Mother say at the end again? "You two will be all right..." She tried her very best to say it with a smile. So we held Mother's hand and told her, "We're all right now. We'll keep getting along, and we'll live happily together..." The whole village came together for the funeral. Somehow... it felt lonelier than usual. But we weren't alone. Even after they returned to the earth, I'm sure Father and Mother were still watching over us. And that's why... the best thing we can do is keep living our lives with a smile.
