Shifting Fast
I remember the first time you let me steer, You smiled and said, “Don’t worry, we’ll make it clear.” The engine roared when I hit the gas, It felt like love—felt like it could last. But when I shifted, it didn’t feel right, I stalled out, but you said, “It’s all in time.” Love feels like slipping into the right gear, Like the world’s moving smoothly, no doubt, no fear. But when it’s heartbreak, it's like stalling out, Everything freezes, and I start to doubt. And in between, we’re drifting wide, Around a gravel bend, just trying to survive. You and me, we were shifting fast, But I couldn’t find the rhythm, and I slipped through the cracks. Love felt like slipping into the right gear, But heartbreak hit hard when I stalled out here. And the in-between, it’s like drifting away, Can’t tell if we’re moving or just wasting the day. Love was the road that felt so true, But now I’m lost, and I’m stuck without you Like learning stick shift on a dirt road. Every turn we took, I thought we’d be fine, But the gears didn’t click, we kept crossing the line. You pulled me close, said, “We’re almost there,” But love’s a ride that’s too hard to repair. I kept trying, but we lost the beat, The engine died, and I couldn’t repeat. Love feels like slipping into the right gear, The world’s in motion, everything’s clear. But when heartbreak comes, it’s a stall in the night, The engine sputters, and nothing feels right. And in between, we’re spinning slow, On a gravel bend, with no way to go. The gears keep grinding, the wheels won’t spin, I thought I could fix it, but I don’t know where to begin. I was slipping into the rhythm, then you let go, And now I’m stuck in neutral, with nowhere to go. Heartbreak’s the stall, but love was the shift, And I’m lost in between, trying to make the drift. Now I’m driving alone, in a world gone cold, The gears don’t click, the ride feels too bold. I’ll keep trying to shift, but I don’t know the way— Just drifting on this road, hoping for a brighter day. Love was the shift, heartbreak was the stall, And in-between, I just can’t find it at all.
