Brought Jerusalem Along

V6

[Spoken Intro] We call Layman and Lemuel rebellious. But they left Jerusalem, went back for the plates, crossed the wilderness, and boarded the boat. That is quite a checklist. [Verse 1] Leave our home in Jerusalem? Check. Go back for the plates? Check. Bring along Ishmael’s family? Well…eventually, check. Cross the desert, build a ship, And sail where we were sent— Our feet kept moving forward, But our hearts stayed where they’d been. [Chorus] We left Jerusalem, But brought it right along; Packed our fears and old traditions, Certain we could not be wrong. We followed through the wilderness, But missed the still small song; Yes, we left Jerusalem— But brought it right along. [Verse 2] Nephi did not know it all; He knelt and asked to see. The Lord came near and softened him— That changed his journey. “Have ye inquired of the Lord?” He asked us plain and true. We said, “We haven’t asked Him; He won’t tell us what to do.” [Bridge] I can follow every footstep, Do what faithful people do, But no one else can seek the Lord And hear His voice for me or you. [Final Chorus] Let’s leave our old Jerusalem, And leave the old heart too; Ask the Lord to make it tender, Let His Spirit lead us through. The checklist starts the journey, But Christ must lead us on; Let’s leave our old Jerusalem— And not bring it along. [Spoken Outro] “Have ye inquired of the Lord?” Well…that box is still empty.
