Warehouse Feedback — The Pallet That Stayed Behind
[SCENE — WFYC RADIO STUDIO] [sound: radio static, warehouse hum, scanners beeping in the distance] [ANNOUNCER: Female, confident radio host] You're listening to WFYC Radio. Warehouse Feedback. Today's topic... When the system remembers something the warehouse forgot. [sound: ON AIR light clicks] [TARZ: Male, calm therapist] Good afternoon. You've got a question. You've got a problem. Let's figure it out. [sound: phone ringing] [TARZ] Warehouse Feedback. You're on the air. [CALLER 1: Male, concerned warehouse worker] Hey. I think we have a missing pallet. [JACQUES: Male, blunt realist] Physically missing? [CALLER 1] I can't find it. [TARZ] What makes you think it's missing? [CALLER 1] The inventory says it's gone. But the holding bay still says it's there. [pause] [JACQUES] That's an interesting argument between two records. [CALLER 1] Exactly. I don't know which one is wrong. [LAIZER BEAM: Female, poised, composed] How many units remain on the pallet? [CALLER 1] None. [LAIZER BEAM] And the inventory count? [CALLER 1] Zero. [LAIZER BEAM] Then the inventory is correct. [CALLER 1] But the location says it should be there. [LAIZER BEAM] The location says where it was. Not necessarily where it is. [TARZ] So the pallet isn't missing? [LAIZER BEAM] No. It finished its process. --- [sound: guitar riff, phone line crackle] [CALLER 1] Wait. Let me explain. It was a full pallet when it came in. Then it got divided between shipments. [JACQUES] There it is. [CALLER 1] What? [JACQUES] The part that explains the problem. [LAIZER BEAM] The pallet was received. The product was allocated. The shipments were created. The remaining quantity became zero. [CALLER 1] So the pallet record closed? [LAIZER BEAM] Correct. [CALLER 1] Then why does the holding bay still show it? [pause] [LAIZER BEAM] Someone forgot the final step. [CALLER 1] Updating the location? [LAIZER BEAM] Yes. [TARZ] The product moved forward. The location stayed behind. [JACQUES] The pallet left. The memory of the pallet stayed. --- [sound: phone ringing] [TARZ] Next caller. [CALLER 2: Female, curious warehouse worker] I have a question. How can something be gone and still be listed? [JACQUES] Because computers are very good at remembering. [LAIZER BEAM] And people are very good at forgetting to update them. [JACQUES] That's also true. [CALLER 2] So which one do you trust? [LAIZER BEAM] Neither alone. [CALLER 2] Neither? [LAIZER BEAM] A location tells you where something should be. Inventory tells you what exists. You need both. [TARZ] The answer is in the conversation between them. [CALLER 2] So one record tells the present... and one tells the history? [LAIZER BEAM] Exactly. [JACQUES] Now you're ready for the warehouse. --- [sound: warehouse ambience rises] [CALLER 3: Male, frustrated warehouse worker] I think I found the problem. The pallet was still showing in the holding bay because nobody cleared it. [TARZ] That happens? [LAIZER BEAM] Yes. Physical work and system work do not always happen at the same time. [CALLER 3] So someone wasn't wrong. They just stopped one step early. [LAIZER BEAM] Correct. [JACQUES] The classic warehouse problem. The job is ninety-nine percent finished. [LAIZER BEAM] And the last one percent is usually where everyone looks. --- [BRIDGE] [sound: stripped guitar, radio hum] [TARZ] Every item has a story. Where it started. Where it moved. Where it ended. [JACQUES] Sometimes the hardest part isn't finding the thing. It's finding the last person who updated the thing. [LAIZER BEAM] Records are not mistakes. They are clues. You just need the correct question. --- [sound: phone ringing] [CALLER 4: Male, amused warehouse worker] So the pallet wasn't lost? [LAIZER BEAM] No. [CALLER 4] It wasn't stolen? [LAIZER BEAM] No. [CALLER 4] It wasn't some warehouse mystery? [pause] [LAIZER BEAM] It was a warehouse mystery. Just not a dramatic one. [JACQUES] The least exciting mystery possible. [TARZ] Which is usually the most common kind. --- [FINAL SECTION] [ANNOUNCER: Female, confident radio host] Warehouse Feedback. Where every mystery gets investigated... even the ones caused by a forgotten checkbox. [sound: forklift passing, scanner beep] [TARZ] Until next shift... keep asking questions. [JACQUES] Check the obvious things first. [LAIZER BEAM] And update the system. [sound: radio static fades]
