Lord, I left at dusk With the trunk packed tight Glass jars clinkin' low Under floodlight white Sheriff on my tail Dust like a ghost behind I kept my eyes on the road And a prayer on my mind [Pre-Chorus] Ten miles of red clay And a fence-line bend I heard that siren howl Then it faded again [Chorus] Thunder on the backroad Thunder on the backroad Keep on rollin' Keep my soul in one piece Thunder on the backroad Thunder on the backroad If he catches me I won't go easy [Verse 2] Bridge at Miller Creek Was a one-lane choke Mud threw up in sheets And the old truck smoked He swung that spotlight wide Like a blade through the night I kissed my thumb and cross And I gunned it hard right [Pre-Chorus] Ten miles of red clay And a fence-line bend I heard that siren howl Then it faded again [Chorus] Thunder on the backroad Thunder on the backroad Keep on rollin' Keep my soul in one piece Thunder on the backroad Thunder on the backroad If he catches me I won't go easy [Bridge] Lord, if this is the end Let it end in speed Let the ditchbank keep What the devil can't read I saw his headlights dip In the wash and sway Then the moon came up And I slipped away [Final Chorus] Thunder on the backroad Thunder on the backroad Keep on rollin' Keep my soul in one piece Thunder on the backroad Thunder on the backroad When the dawn breaks in I'll be clean as a thief
