Song Eight — “Tonight, Tonight (We Have to Go Tonight)” — Vivienne & Martin

Strong female-weak male tense duet, minor key reprise, tense duet, emotional cabaret, cinematic urgency, trembling vocals, dark romantic waltz, escape theme

[Female] Tonight, tonight, we have to go tonight, There’s a knock in the street and a shadow of fright. They’re asking for papers, they’re asking for names— Tonight, oh tonight, the world isn’t the same. [Male] Tomorrow, or next week, we still have time, There’s no need to hurry, no reason to climb. They’re only checking strangers, or so I’ve been told— Tonight, oh tonight, let’s wait till it’s cold. [Female] No, Martin, no— you don’t understand. They’re asking the neighbors, they’re searching the land. If they find out about me, if they find out about you— Tonight, oh tonight, we’re already through. Tonight, tonight, we have to go tonight— (We still have time, there’s no need for fright…) The streets are too quiet, the lamps burning white— (They’re only checking, it will be all right…) Tonight, oh tonight, the danger is near— (Why run away when there’s nothing to fear…) Tonight, oh tonight… I finally know what fear is.
