It's 5 p.m. I shut the computer down for the day
Walked down the stairs with nothin’ much to say
She was sittin’ at the table, with colored pencils drawing’ flowers
Just Doodlin’ away like she’d been at it a few hours
I opened my mouth just to ask how her day was
But she hit me with it before I could even say “hey” She gave me the list Did the laundry, washed all the sheets
Walked the dog in this god-awful heat
Cleaned the dishes except for the pots and pans
Fed the dog and scooped the cat’s litter boxes
One after ‘nother she listed off at least twenty things
Guess she was tryin’ to pull on my heartstrings
Yeah, she gave me the list I said “Baby that’s wonderful, thank you for all that you do
Without you I’m pretty sure I’d never make it through”
Figured it was smarter to say that and let her glow
Than to point out, if it took her all day to do those things, she was workin’ real slow Must’ve said out loud what I was thinkin’ inside
An’ those words I thought I said stayed internal instead
She looked at me and got wild-eyed
Her shoe came a-flyin’ right past my head
I just stood there and gave her a sheepish grin
Knew if it turned into a fight I surely wouldn’t win
And before I could figure out how to apologize She gave me the list
Picked up all the clothes you left on the floor
Mopped the kitchen from that sticky mess you made before An’ that time you wouldn’t listen to me ‘cause you said you knew the way. You took a left instead of a right, ended up staying in a seedy motel that night. What about that thing you said you could fix, it's been a year, so I went ahead and pitched it
“And remember all the times you put your foot in your mouth?” Then she followed with twenty more, and this was headin’ south—real fast. Yeah-ɑː, she gave me the list Rapid-fire, head spinnin’, but I couldn’t stop grinnin’
“Baby I love you and that fire in your belly
Just lookin’ at you turns me into jelly
How about I cook you dinner tonight?”
That one landed—she softened just right
Asked her what she had in mind
But the ingredients I couldn’t find So she gave me the list
Yeah, she gave me the listHad to take a grocery-store trip
Hopin’ there isn’t a single thing I forget “Oh… hey. The beer aisle!”
