Clean Bones, Going Home

Appalachian mountain gospel, dark folk blues, old-time / hill-country folk hymn

[Verse 1A – Brother 1, Far Hilltop Lead]
There comes a time in every man’s life
When he’s got to face the simple fact
That age will slow the things we do
No amount of trying can bring it back

[Verse 1B – Brother 2, Answering Hilltop]
It’s the truth we don’t much talk about
When we watch our old folks fade
The passing years don’t leave much doubt
Of the end no soul can evade

[Verse 1C – Brother 3, Low Weathered Lead]
That’s right, I said it, every soul is gonna die
Quit frettin’ over some Earthly cure
When your time comes, it’s coming
Ain’t a thing to do, and that’s for sure

[Verse 1D – All Three, Slow Rising Harmony]
So live this life how the good Lord says
Be kind, work hard, love, give, and laugh
Marry your best friend and make it count
And follow the Lord’s righteous path

[Verse 2A – Brother 2 Lead / Brother 1 Low Echo]
Mistakes made somewhere down the road
Come back to bite when you least expect
And it’s a hard truth to behold
A cold reminder you ain’t perfect

[Verse 2B – Brother 3 Lead / Brother 2 High Harmony]
Pride comes before the fall, as it’s written
Humility’s a hard pill to swallow
We stand like mountains unto ourselves
More times than not, too proud to follow

[Verse 2C – Brother 1 Lead, Bare and Close]
You can’t be more than who you are
No matter what you tell yourself
Lost, unclean, and unworthy
Ain’t nothing you can mend with wealth

[Verse 2D – All Three, Church-Holler Harmony]
You gotta own what you truly are
Before this world don’t matter no more
Kneel down low at the foot of the cross
There you’ll be shown the door

[Verse 3A – Brother 3 Lead / Brothers 1 & 2 Soft Harmony]
Repent and take to the change
God’s will then becomes yours
The Lord will call you by name
You’ll rest upon golden shores

[Verse 3B – Brother 1 Lead / Brother 2 High Answer]
That grace will loose your soul
From the dark into the light
And from there you’re gonna know
What was hidden all your life

[Verse 3C – Brother 2 Lead, Soul-Stirring]
A peace no tongue can render
A sight that makes the silence clear
A yearning to serve our Creator
A freedom from pain and fear

[Verse 3D – All Three, Rapturous Harmony]
Your mistakes and trials are over
Healed and whole, there you stand
You need only bow and surrender
And reach for His loving hand

[Outro – Brother 1 Lead / All Three Final Harmony]
That is why I said where to lay my bones
I found that peace deep in my heart
By accepting the Lord Jesus Christ, as my own
He has cleansed me, and from this life I part
