[Intro - 4-part vocal group oohs, tight brass stabs, snapping hi-hat] [Verse 1 - smooth lead vocal, swinging groove] Gray clouds hanging low on the Chicago line Coffee going cold and the phone's on the grind Bills stacked up like a tower on the kitchen table But I got a pocketful of hope and a grin that's able Somebody whispered "keep it steady" on the wind Looked around and found a reason to begin [Pre-Chorus - harmonies stacking, ascending brass] Hold on, hold on, let the rhythm lead Every step's a little dance, every heart's a little bead Let the sun come up in its funky, golden way [Chorus - full vocal group harmony, punchy brass, call and response] A brighter day is near, oh yeah A brighter day is near Sweet morning sun is coming through the pines Shake it loose and let the good times shine A brighter day is near, hey now Keep the faith and let the rhythm show A brighter day is near [Verse 2 - fast scat intro, playful rhythm] Bop-ba-doo-wop, bop-ba-dee-dah Trumpets in the kitchen, sax in the car Grandkids on the carpet, dancing with a spoon Grandma's got the groove, Grandpa's got the tune Took the long road home, the sky went orange-gold Every mile a melody, every story told [Bridge - stripped to Rhodes electric piano, vocal harmonies, slap bass] Look at where we've been and where we're going The hard days taught us how to keep on flowing Pick the lock on tomorrow with a song in your heart Sing it out, sing it proud, let the joy start [Instrumental Break - tenor sax and muted trumpet trade-off, vocal scatting] [Chorus - key change up one half-step, full horn blast, gospel harmonies] A brighter day is near, oh yeah A brighter day is near Sweet morning sun is coming through the pines Shake it loose and let the good times shine A brighter day is near, hey now Keep the faith and let the rhythm show A brighter day is near, yes it is A brighter day is near [Outro - fading vocal harmonies, final brass stab, sub bass tail] A brighter day... a brighter day... is near [End]
