HypaViper:The Company You Keep

V6

THE COMPANY YOU KEEP [SPOKEN LECTURE — NATURAL FEMALE SPEAKING VOICE — DIRECT, INTELLIGENT, GROUNDED — NO SINGING] Let me tell you something about company. Company is not just who you call when you're lonely. Company is influence. It is access. It is environment. And whether you realize it or not— the people closest to you are participating in the construction of your life. [pause] Pay attention. Spend enough time around people who complain about everything, and eventually possibility starts sounding unrealistic. Spend enough time around people who normalize dysfunction, and peace starts feeling boring. Stay around people who make jokes every time you grow, and eventually you'll start shrinking yourself before you enter the room. Not because they told you to. Because human beings adapt to their environments. And relationships are environments. [pause] That's why you have to stop asking only: “Do I love them?” That's not enough. Ask: Who do I become around them? That's the question. Who are you after you've spent three hours with them? Do you feel expanded? Clear? Motivated? Safe? Do you leave thinking bigger? Or do you leave irritated, second-guessing yourself, explaining yourself, recovering from something they called a joke? Pay attention to that. [pause] Some people don't have to be evil to be wrong for your life. That's important. Everybody you outgrow doesn't need to become a villain. Sometimes two people simply stop producing something healthy together. You can love somebody and recognize that the relationship has reached its boundary. You can appreciate who somebody was to you without giving them permanent access to who you're becoming. History is not a lifetime membership. [SPOKEN — FIRMER] And access matters. Everybody should not know everything. Everybody should not be able to reach you whenever they want. Everybody should not have a vote in your decisions. Everybody should not be invited into the room where you're building something fragile. We talk about boundaries like they're punishments. They're not. A boundary simply answers: What level of access does this relationship qualify for? That's it. Some people belong close. Some belong at a distance. Some belong in a specific part of your life. And some people— belong in the memory. [pause] Now here's where it gets uncomfortable. You also have to ask what kind of company you are. Because everybody wants a good circle. But are you good company? Do you celebrate people when their opportunity arrives first? Can somebody tell you good news without you finding a way to make it smaller? Do you listen? Do you reciprocate? Can people grow without you treating their growth like abandonment? Can they change their mind? Can they become somebody you didn't predict? Can somebody set a boundary with you without you calling them fake? [pause] Because choosing better company doesn't mean sitting on a throne evaluating everybody else. It means becoming capable of participating in healthy relationships yourself. [pause] And sometimes healing changes your address without changing your apartment. You stop sitting at certain tables. Stop answering certain calls. Stop participating in certain conversations. Stop volunteering information. Stop explaining decisions that don't require a committee. And suddenly— the same life has a completely different atmosphere. That's not isolation. That's discernment. [pause] Your circle influences what you normalize. What you tolerate. What you imagine. What you attempt. What you believe is available to you. So look around. Not with suspicion. With awareness. Who encourages your evolution? Who requires your stagnation to remain comfortable? Who can handle your boundaries? Who only enjoys your availability? Who tells you the truth? Who competes quietly? Who shows up? Who drains the room? Who brings peace into it? And most importantly— who are you becoming in their company? [pause] You don't have to hate anybody. You don't have to announce anything. You don't have to create a dramatic ending. Sometimes the most powerful change is simply changing proximity. Because the relationships you build shape the life you live. And some of the biggest decisions you will ever make will not be about money, work, or where you live. They will be about who gets to come with you. [pause] Choose wisely. The company you keep is helping you become somebody. Make sure it's somebody you actually want to be.
