She Twisted round and round as the dance took all of him until it held him in its thrall On until In the storm of his confusion he understood Being human Would drag him Deep Weighted Down By the words of wisdom That had surrounded him Before He had struck out Departing their harbour he looked back at the shore the lights had changed
and made of it all
an unrecognisable and unknown landfall From the shore
a figure
He could barely fashion called to him
to tell
how
The only thing to be done was to dive deep There only Might a reason be found An experience Of what And why dark and life effacing the logic of the land Would only allow whatever he might find to sink him forever But time and time again He sent out a cry To the gods of the sea And then
He had managed To find such things as shore dwellers did not want to see To bring
to the surface
And place them Before
their unwilling eyes dreaming promised to Hold him close Wrap him
Safe within its embrace Then Flew away He charted the stars Left in Solitary Thought he recognised A life Spent in pleasing others Never rustling Even gently Their comfort Suppressing each moment Of righteous anger The only gift of a restless night Leaving him Insecure Nothing held the mystery For him
Like the sea itself
