On the night of the summer solstice, as war engulfs their homeland, the children flee south through forests, mountains, and bamboo groves. Remembering stories told by their grandmother beside the fire that on certain nights fireflies flow like a river and guide the lost. Spirits, yokai and entities guide them to a hidden church (when Christianity was banned). Not a religious story, but blend of cultures and beliefs including Shinto and Buddhist. [Verse 1] The summer solstice arrived, the longest day of the year. Beside the cedar fire, Grandmother told us stories: "On the night when fireflies flow like a river, our ancestors come wrapped in light to watch over us." The cicadas sang, the banners swayed, Father smiled. Back then, we did not yet know war. [Pre-Chorus] But night came. Steel split the darkness. Flames stained the sky. The castle burned. [Chorus] Fireflies, oh fireflies, crossing seas of bamboo Are you the voices of our ancestors, or are you spirits of death? Fireflies, oh fireflies, beneath the smoke-filled sky, Will you guide us toward tomorrow, or lead us into the land of the dead? Southward, southward, To the place where the stars touch the sea. [Verse 2] Within the bamboo grove, the night turned to gold. Countless lights, like a flowing river. Trembling, my little sister grasped my sleeve. "Are they our ancestors?" "Are they spirits of death?" I answered: "Then why, I wonder, do they fly south?" The mountains remained silent. Only the lights moved onward. Toward a hidden mountain pass, with our burning homeland behind us. [Bridge] Beneath the shrine, beneath the stones, beneath the roots of an ancient pine, There was a light. There was a prayer. A hidden chapel. The old priest said: "The light has brought you here." South wind from the southern sea, foreign ships rocking on the waves. [Final Chorus] Fireflies, oh fireflies, Southern sea winds, Foreign ships sway upon the waves. Fireflies, oh fireflies, Final summer sky, Our homeland is far away, yet the light does not fade. Southward, southward, Beyond the horizon of fate. [Outro] The ships crossed the sea, sailing toward the dawn. The fireflies became stars and vanished into the ocean. Were they our ancestors? Were they messengers from heaven? Were they spirits of death? Even now, I do not know. Only one thing is certain: Those lights kept us alive.
