After The Veilwake

V6

[Intro - spoken shakily over distant tubular bells, low organ, trembling breath] I... I don't know why I came here. I haven't slept. Every time I close my eyes, I see that night again. The sea went black. The clocks stopped. And something looked back at me wearing every fear I've ever buried. [Verse 1 - sung quietly, voice unsteady, sparse piano and tubular bells] I saw my children calling out, But I could never reach their hands. I saw my home without a light, My name erased from where I stand. I heard a voice that sounded mine Say everything I feared was true. That I was weak, That I would fail, That everyone I loved would leave me too. And when the morning finally came, The nightmare didn't disappear. The sun rose over Twilight's Ember, But it couldn't reach me here. [Pre-Chorus - sung with rising desperation] So I came beneath these windows, I came beneath this roof, Not because my faith is strong... But because I need the truth. [Chorus - sung with restrained anguish, organ growing beneath him] Tell me there's a place where fear can't follow. Tell me doubt is not the end. Tell me what I saw that night Doesn't have to rise again. I don't need you to tell me That the darkness wasn't real. I just need to know That something greater Can teach a frightened heart to heal. [Verse 2 - sung more openly, still shaken] I thought believing meant no questions. I thought the faithful never shook. I thought a righteous man stood fearless, Like the heroes in the books. But I was on my knees that night. I begged the dark to let me go. And every prayer I thought I knew Was swallowed by the undertow. So if You heard me in that darkness, Why did You let me see The very things I'd spent my whole life Hiding even from me? [Bridge - nearly spoken, music drops low, one tubular bell tolls] And then... Nothing answers. No thunder. No angel. No voice from the sky. Only morning through the stained glass... And somebody sitting beside me. [Verse 3 - sung softly, breathing begins to steady, piano warms] They didn't tell me not to tremble. They didn't tell me I was wrong. They said, "Fear may sit beside you, But it doesn't have to lead you on." They said courage isn't silence. Faith isn't never asking why. Sometimes faith is taking one more step While fear is screaming not to try. And maybe what I saw that night Was everything I couldn't face. But if the Veil could show my deepest fear... Then I can choose what takes its place. [Chorus - fuller voice, tubular bells fading, strings and soft choir entering] There is a place where fear may follow, But it cannot rule the road. There are hands that help you carry What you cannot bear alone. I don't need to lie and say That I will never fear again. I just know the dark can find me... And still not have the final word. [Final Verse - sung peacefully, organ softens, hand bells begin replacing tubular bells] The clocks outside are moving now. Morning rests upon the stone. The things I saw are still a part of me... But I don't face them alone. I came here begging for escape, For some way not to feel. I leave here knowing peace Is not forgetting... Peace is knowing I can heal. [Outro - very soft, warm hand bells, gentle acoustic or piano] So let tomorrow come. Let the bells ring small and clear. I know the dark may call my name... But I don't have to answer fear. [soft hand bells] I'm still here. And morning is here too.
