For the Celts, Samhain marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter — a time when the veil between the living and the dead was believed to be at its thinnest. People lit bonfires, wore disguises to ward off spirits, and left out offerings for wandering souls. When Christianity spread to Ireland, Samhain traditions blended with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, turning into a mix of sacred remembrance and folk customs. Irish immigrants later brought these traditions to the United States in the 19th century, where practices like trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving (originally turnips in Ireland!), and haunted fun evolved into the modern Halloween we know today. In short: Halloween began as a Celtic Irish festival honoring spirits and the cycle of seasons, then transformed through Christian influence and Irish immigration into the playful celebration we now enjoy worldwide. 🍀🎃🍀🎃🍀🎃🍀🎃🍀🎃🍀🎃🍀🎃🍀🎃🍀🎃🍀🎃🍀 [Intro] Aye They think Halloween came from Hollywood, huh? Heh let me tell ya a ghost story about Ireland, the first haunted hood. [Verse 1] Long before masks and candy treats, We lit up fires on Celtic streets. When ghost roamed and nerves grew thin, We carved turnips not pumpkins in. Sah-win nights, the harvest’s end, Where dead and living dance again. So when you dress up, scream and lean Remember, lad we made Halloween. [Hook] We made Halloween from the mist and the flame, From ancient chants and the druid’s name. Before your sweets and zombie scene The ghosts were Irish, the fire was green! We made Halloween We made Halloween [Verse 2] We wore the masks to fool the dead, So no lost soul would steal our bread. Left food out for the wandering kin, Cause you don’t mess with what’s within. Now you call it spooky fun, We call it Sah-win, old and done. No plastic bats, no movie screen Just moonlit hills and the banshee’s scream! [Hook] We made Halloween from the mist and the flame, From ancient chants and the druid’s name. Before your sweets and zombie scene The ghosts were Irish, the fire was green! We made Halloween We made Halloween [Bridge] Aye, the Yanks dressed it up in sugar and shine, But the bone and fire were truly mine. We danced with death, we drank with fear Ireland birthed your favorite year. Yeah we did [Final Hook] We made Halloween from the mist and the flame, From ancient chants and the druid’s name. Before your sweets and zombie scene The ghosts were Irish, the fire was green! So light your lantern, paint your grin But never forget where it all begins In the land of clovers, dark and mean, The Leprechaun Fam made Halloween! We made Halloween We made Halloween [Outro] Heheheh Now go trick or treat, lad but thank the Irish first. We made Halloween from the mist and the flame, From ancient chants and the druid’s name. Before your sweets and zombie scene The ghosts were Irish, the fire was green! We made Halloween We made Halloween
