TIME 016 – What the Darkness Eats | The Time Machine

(Verse 1) The Traveller faced a darker truth beneath the future sky, For something in the Morlocks told him why the Eloi die. The old arrangement lingered, but its purpose had been turned, And privilege became the flesh on which the darkness learned. (Verse 2) The Morlocks kept the surface and the helpless people fed, Not out of care or service, but to harvest them instead. The Eloi lived in sunlight with no knowledge of the price, While hidden hands sustained them for a purpose cold as ice. (Chorus) The darkness fed below them where the pale-eyed Morlocks wait, And every gentle Eloi lived beneath an unseen fate. The servants of the old world had inherited the night, And now they kept their former masters helpless for the bite. (Verse 3) He saw the ancient class divide reversed beneath the ground, Where those once bent by labour now controlled the world around. The Eloi had no weapons and no strength with which to flee, They lived like tended creatures in a false tranquillity. (Verse 4) The gardens were not paradise, but pasture in disguise, A feeding ground beneath the calm of soft and cloudless skies. The future's peace was horror dressed in blossom, fruit and ease, While something bred in darkness fed upon them as it pleased. (Chorus) The darkness fed below them where the pale-eyed Morlocks wait, And every gentle Eloi lived beneath an unseen fate. The servants of the old world had inherited the night, And now they kept their former masters helpless for the bite. (Bridge) The Traveller understood the final cruelty of the plan, The ancient war of classes had not vanished out of man. It changed its form through ages till the balance turned complete, And those once born to labour learned to raise their lords as meat. (Outro) He looked upon the Eloi with a sorrow newly grown, For now he knew the secret of the kindness they were shown. The future's brightest gardens hid a truth beneath their feet, A world where helpless beauty lived to feed what darkness eats.
