Welcome, shimmering believers, to the Chapel of Improper Instruments. First doctrine. No sound must remain what it first appeared to be. Wood may sparkle, bells may growl, little flutes may learn to howl. A drum may sing. A violin may knock. An organ may become a very nervous bird. Change the color, bend the tone, make the borrowed sound your own. Do not ask, “What instrument is this?” Ask, “What has it become?” Come, unusual timbre, step into the light. Wear a different texture. Do not fit quite right. Bright may crack, soft may bite, wrong materials feel right. Second doctrine. Every sound deserves an unnecessary decoration. Give the bass a silver tail, give the snare a tiny veil, dress the silence, paint the air, put a bell on everywhere. The sacred orchestra contains one spoon, three springs, a broken music box, and something glowing backstage. Do not name it. Let it ring Mystery improves everything. Behold! The melody has changed instruments without changing its clothes! Brighter, stranger, sharp and sweet! Turn the texture into beat! Every surface may resound! Every object may be found! Strike the shimmer! Bow the noise! Let the timbres make the choice! Go now in resonance. That was not an instrument. IT HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE ORCHESTRA! Change the color! Change the shape! Let no little sound escape! When the heavens ask for beauty, give them texture, give them ringing, give them strange acoustics! And one more squeak. Amen! Amen! A-squeak!
