GOD CAUSED HIM TO BELIEVE Abraham's Journey from Idols to Friendship with God If You Look, You May See… [INTRO — Dark piano, quiet workshop sounds, a chisel tapping wood] [NARRATOR — low, reflective] If you look, you may see A son who learned his father's trade, Who carved the gods the people bought, And told the stories they were taught. His father knew just what to say, And Abraham had played along. But something deep inside him stirred: What if the whole thing had been wrong? [VERSE 1 — ABRAHAM, sarcastic, speaking to an idol] Well, little god, I've made you well. Now, can you hear me? Can you tell? I've carved your eyes, I've shaped your face. Now show me you deserve your place! Come on, speak! I've done my part. I gave you eyes. I gave you art. You look so wise, you look so grand. Now tell me, god, what is your plan? [PAUSE — He waits. Nothing but the sound of a tool falling on the table.] [VERSE 2 — ABRAHAM, mockingly at first, then troubled] You cannot hear. You cannot speak. You cannot help the poor and weak. You cannot tell me what is true. You cannot do what gods should do. And yet the people bow and pray. They trust in what we make each day. And I have helped them trust a lie. What have I done? And why? Oh, why? [VERSE 3 — FATHER, entering, warm but firm] Son, what are you doing there? Those words are not for others to hear. The people need what we provide. There's no need to look inside. We've made our living all these years. Don't throw away what brought us here. The world is built on what men know. Why question what we've always sold? [VERSE 4 — ABRAHAM, no longer laughing] But, Father, if these gods are real, Why must we tell them what to feel? Why must we speak for them each day? Why must we teach the words they say? If they are gods, then let them speak! Let them answer those who seek! I cannot tell them what is true. I need a God who can speak, too. [INSTRUMENTAL — The music falls away; Abraham is alone.] [ABRAHAM — QUIET, NO LONGER MOCKING] If You are there, whoever You are, Beyond these walls, beyond the stars, I do not know Your name or face. But I cannot find You in this place. I've spent my years on what I've made. I've helped the people be afraid. If there is truth I have not known, Then let me find it. Lead me home. [NARRATOR — Deep, gentle, with a low cello beginning] Before he knew the One who hears, He had to face the lie of years. Before the answer could be known, He had to see what he had sown. [GOD'S CALL — A quiet voice, not yet explaining everything] [The music opens into a sense of wonder.] [NARRATOR] The Lord would call him from his land, Beyond the life he understood. And what no idol could provide, The living God would give in time.
