A Different Universe

V6

The world keeps changing day by day. We’ve lost our bearings on the way. The old familiar order’s gone. The new one still has yet to dawn. All roles got mixed up long ago. Who’s who? It hardly matters, though. Behind a hundred doors lies night. No one is there. No one in sight. We write much more and listen less. We draw more lines between ourselves. Just screens and silence everywhere. No trace of sense left anywhere. A senseless universe held sway And quietly swept us away. Our old world has already burned. The new sleeps in between the worlds. We search for meaning in each line And drown in words without a sign. The world hid in the words we write And faded into lines of type. That’s where we work. That’s where we live. And day by day, that’s where we drift. We’ve turned to text upon a screen, Alive somewhere beneath, unseen. One little move, and that’s goodbye. No hands to hold. No meeting eyes. A senseless universe held sway And quietly swept us away. Our old world has already burned. The new sleeps in between the worlds. We search for meaning in each line And drown in words without a sign. Each angle shows a different scene. We each see where our feet have been. The truth lies hidden far below. So few will walk the path it shows. All hurry blindly, swept along, Because to stop is to be wrong. No one knows where that end might lie. “Don’t fall behind!” is what they cry. One guards their home against the threat, While someone else grows fat on that. And once again, it’s them to blame. Our own could never be the same. First check the facts; find out what’s true. Then trust the ones who speak to you. When trouble comes, how quick we claim That all outsiders bear the blame. A senseless universe held sway And quietly swept us away. Our old world has already burned. The new sleeps in between the worlds. We search for meaning in each line And drown in words without a sign. We teach the chat to grasp our speech. Our own words slip beyond our reach. It knows so much, yet fails to see The human in both you and me. It’s quick to answer what we ask, But living is a different task. What do we need to live this life? To hold on to our name through time. No need for wonders by the score. A drop of sense, and nothing more. A senseless universe held sway And quietly swept us away. Our old world has already burned. The new sleeps in between the worlds. Search through these words for your own way. Don’t let them carry you astray.
