Of Hearth & Moss - Under The Sun
Morning light on the garden bed Cool soil loosens under the rake Shovel cuts through a line of earth Turn it over, break and shake Seed packets folded in my back pocket Names written out in black ink Sun hits low across the rows Warms the ground quicker than you think Sun on my back, dirt on my hands Plant it down where it lands Water it slow, let it be That’s enough, that’s all I need Flowers come up without a sound Green fills in the open ground No noise, no need to speak Just the garden and the peace Trowel digs small for the starters Roots set in, covered tight Press it firm so it holds its place Give it water, not too much, just right Wildflowers scattered by the fence line No rows, just let them fall Let the wind decide the spacing They’ll come up where they want to call Sun on my back, dirt on my hands Plant it down where it lands Water it slow, let it be That’s enough, that’s all I need Flowers come up without a sound Green fills in the open ground No noise, no need to speak Just the garden and the peace Hoe through the weeds in the midday heat Steel blade cuts them at the root Pile them up for the compost heap Turn it over, let it cook Gloves hang off, I don’t use ‘em Feel the soil, dry or damp Move the hose from bed to bed Watch it soak and slowly clamp Bees move low through the clover patch Yellow dust on their legs Petals open in the full sun Red and purple, whites and reds Cut a few for the kitchen jar Leave the rest where they grow Let it fill in thick and wide More than I’ll ever need to know Sun on my back, dirt on my hands Plant it down where it lands Water it slow, let it be That’s enough, that’s all I need Flowers come up without a sound Green fills in the open ground No noise, no need to speak Just the garden and the peace Rake leaned up against the shed Hose wound loose, day’s work done Light fades out across the rows Back again with the sun
