I’ve seen the Mississippi rise, watched a hurricane roll through Seen a lifetime change beneath a sky of blue But there’s one thing I learned where the cane fields meet the sky You don’t have to see tomorrow to hold on to the Word of Life There’s a two-lane road through the sugarcane Where the summer heat rolls in with the rain A little white church outside Sorrento Where I sit with the Lord and let my troubles go I used to ask where this road would lead What the good Lord had in store for me But somewhere between those fields and that church I learned that trusting Him comes first Down here in south Louisiana Where the river bends and the cypress grow Where the church bells ring on Sunday morning And the cane fields turn to gold I don’t know what tomorrow’s bringing And I don’t need to know tonight Long as I’ve got Jesus walking with me I’ll hold on to the Word of Life I’ve seen the water rise and the hard times fall Seen neighbors show up when somebody calls And I reckon faith is a lot like that You keep moving forward, don’t keep looking back Sometimes I drive through old St. Amant Past the places where I’ve lived and loved Watch my daughter growing up too fast And thank the Lord for the days that last I’ve spent some nights down on my knees Asking God for things I couldn’t see But I’ve learned that silence don’t mean He’s gone Sometimes faith is just holding on Down here in south Louisiana Where the river bends and the cypress grow Where the church bells ring on Sunday morning And the cane fields turn to gold I don’t know what tomorrow’s bringing And I don’t need to know tonight Long as I’ve got Jesus walking with me I’ll hold on to the Word of Life I’ve watched the sunset over Bayou Manchac Thought about the years I can’t get back But I’ve got a family and a place to call home And a God who reminds me I’m never alone So when my days down here are through And I’ve done all that I was called to do I hope they’ll say I loved my own And trusted God all the way back home Down here in south Louisiana Where the river bends and the cypress grow I don’t know what tomorrow’s bringing But I know who’s by my side You can keep tomorrow, Lord, I’ll give You today And hold on to the Word of Life along the way Yeah, the cane will grow and the river will rise And the years will keep rolling by Right here in south Louisiana I’ll hold on to the Word of Life
