[slow build lush piano chords]

[spoken word whispering] "Let us see whether the heaven is made of clay, or of brass, or of iron."
[hijaz scale hook]

[transition]

[singer A]
It's always been our nature
To make every kind of brick
Bricks of silt and clay,

Bricks of math and sand,

Bricks of pure ideas,

Of the narrative,
And its derivative...

[transition]

[middle eastern drumming]
[singer B]
[softly]
[Chorus 1, singing]
Did we climb,
Did we climb this mountain,
Did we climb this mountain before…

[Chorus 2, singing]
Did we build,
Did we build this tower,
Did we build this tower before…

[transition]
[singer A]
And one atop another, oh,
Life repeats its pattern,
Same as ants lay soil on soil,
Same as birds lay twig on twig,
We are the ape that always makes
The spiral staircase to the heavens…

[transition]

[singer B]
[whispered spoken word, multivocal, echo filter, distortion] And they began to build,
(Etemenanki)
and in the fourth week they made brick with fire,
(בבל)
and the bricks served them for stone,
(Babylon)
and the clay with which they cemented them together
(בבל)
was asphalt which comes out of the sea,
(the Tower)
and out of the fountains of water in the land of Shinar.
(water, water, water)

[Chorus 1]
Did we climb,
Did we climb this mountain,
Did we climb this mountain before…

[Chorus 2]
Did we build,
Did we build this tower,
Did we build this tower before…

[transition]

[bridge] [a flat major] [taiko drums]
[singer A]
Blessed art thou, lord our God,
Who made us never satisfied,
Who gave us will to heresy
And hands for every brick to guide.

Blessed art thou, lord our God,
Who made our feet to climb the stair!
Who made our faces seek the sun
And blind our eyes with what is there!

[Chorus 3] [f minor]
[singer A]
Every tower some day falls,
Every voice to heaven calls,
The greatest sum begins with one,
Stagger home to Babylon.

[bells tolling]

[singer A]
[solo vocal] [acoustic, quietly, softly, slowly]
Every tower some day falls,
Every voice to heaven calls,
The greatest sum begins with one,
Stagger home to Babylon.
