[Intro | spoken, sparse, close] Log three... Hi Lou. We went outside today, in the suits, Tomàs and me, to fix a panel on the ridge. And something walked with me. I'm sure of it. All the way out, and all the way back from the edge. [Verse 1] You can't hear anything out there. No air. Just your own breath in the helmet, loud. But halfway up the ridge, I felt it. The way you feel someone stand beside you in a crowd. I stopped. It stopped. I turned around. Nothing. Grey dust, black sky, the Earth above the hill. My suit counts heartbeats, for safety. Boss watches every one. He's very good at sitting still. When I got back, he showed me the screen. Six of us on the base. Six hearts, he said. All fine. And then a seventh one. Slow. Very slow. Walking right next to mine. [Hook | urgent, building] Seven heartbeats. Seven heartbeats. Six of us, and one more, keeping time beside the rest. Seven heartbeats. Seven heartbeats. I can't see it, but I feel it, like a hand against my chest. [Verse 2] So I did what I do with you when you can't sleep. I talked. I said, "That's Earth, up there. That blue bit is the sea. The white bits are clouds. And somewhere down there, on a chair, my daughter's eating toast. Her name is Lou. She's ten. She's brilliant. She's loud." And the seventh heartbeat quickened. Just a little. Like it was pleased. Like it was proud. So I told it about you all the way back. Your drawings. Your cat. Your terrible jokes. And at the airlock, it stopped, and stayed outside, the way a neighbour waits, and then goes. [Bridge | slower, softer] Boss says the sensor's faulty. He's ordered a new one. It'll come in a month. But tonight he stood at the airlock window, alone, and said "hello". Just once. I saw him from the corridor. Then he came back in, made everyone cocoa, and didn't say a word. Not one. [Hook] Seven heartbeats. Seven heartbeats. Six of us, and one more, keeping time beside the rest. Seven heartbeats. Seven heartbeats. I can't see it, but I feel it, like a hand against my chest. [Outro | quiet, spoken] That's log three. Tell your class we're not alone. Then tell them I said it nicely.
