TIME 010 – The Machine Is Gone | The Time Machine
(Verse 1) The Traveller returned at last across the quiet lawn, Expecting where he left it that the waiting frame had drawn. But empty grass received him where the brass machine had lain, And disbelief gave way at once to anger, fear and pain. (Verse 2) He searched among the flowers and he circled through the ground, Yet nowhere in the garden could the vanished thing be found. Then marks impressed the turf revealed where something heavy passed, A trail that led towards the Sphinx and stopped beneath it fast. (Chorus) The machine was gone, and with it lay his only road from here, A stolen bridge to yesterday now swallowed into fear. The future closed around him as the dreadful truth grew clear, Without the frame he fashioned, he might never leave this year. (Verse 3) The White Sphinx watched in silence from its pedestal of stone, Its sealed and massive frontage gave no answer of its own. He traced the marks directly to the base beneath its face, And knew the hidden mystery was centred in that place. (Verse 4) He struck against the panels and demanded they divide, Convinced the stolen engine had been dragged and locked inside. But nothing moved before him and no opening could be seen, The stone remained unbroken where they hid his bright machine. (Chorus) The machine was gone, and with it lay his only road from here, A stolen bridge to yesterday now swallowed into fear. The future closed around him as the dreadful truth grew clear, Without the frame he fashioned, he might never leave this year. (Bridge) His theories fell to pieces as a sharper danger grew, For someone in this gentle world possessed a purpose too. The Eloi seemed too careless for a scheme of such design, So other hands were moving where the sunlight could not shine. (Outro) He stood beneath the White Sphinx as the evening shadows spread, And followed every footprint where the stolen burden led. The paradise around him now concealed a darker song, For somewhere close beneath him lay the thing that sent him home.
