They say every man gets a godfather. Mine didn’t knock. He just showed up… with time in his eyes. I had no gold, no bread, no name, no hand to help me stand. Then he stepped out of the quiet night, said, “Boy, I understand.” He said, “I’m Death, but don’t be scared, I’m fair, I don’t pretend.” “When life gives nothing to a man, sometimes Death becomes a friend.” My godfather is Death, yeah, my godfather is Death. He don’t steal your tomorrow, he just tells you what you got left. He gave me a gift wrapped cold and clean, said, “You’ll heal the sick and weak.” “If I stand beside their head,” he said, “they’ll live — if not, don’t speak.” “When I’m down by their feet,” he warned, “don’t fight what’s already done.” I nodded yes, but deep inside I thought I’d outsmart the sun. My godfather is Death, yeah, my godfather is Death. He don’t care about your prayers, just the seconds in your breath. I healed the poor, I healed the kings, heard money talk real loud. Then greed leaned in and whispered slow, said, “Boy, you’re getting proud.” I turned the bed, I changed the rules, thought I was clever, smooth. But Death just smiled that quiet smile that knows the final move. My godfather is Death, yeah, my godfather is Death. You can lie to everyone, but he remembers every step. He took me down where the candles burn, a thousand flames in a row. He said, “Each light’s a human life… now find the one you know.” I saw mine shaking in the dark, burning thin and blue. Death looked once, then looked away, said, “Son… this one’s you.” I fell to my knees, begged for time, said, “Please, I’ve learned my part.” But mercy’s just a human word that don’t move a clockwork heart. Death ain’t cruel, Death ain’t kind, he’s honest to the bone. He just closes every door we were never meant to own. My godfather is Death, yeah, my godfather is Death. He don’t come with fire or fear, just silence when there’s nothing left. If he’s standing by your head, keep playing… keep singing… stay. But if he’s down by your feet, lay it down. It’s time to walk away.
