The cities were alive, the nights crowded with movement and sound. Music drifted from open windows, and no one believed that anything was about to end. The Shangles wrote Shifting Horizons almost casually. Not as a statement, not as a warning, but as a reflection of a subtle feeling — that perspectives were shifting, even if no one could say why. There was no alarm in it, no urgency. Just a quiet sense that something had changed. Joellyn later described the song as “a moment between two steps — when you don’t yet realize you’re leaving solid ground.” Musically, the track was unusually light for the Shangles. Groove instead of drama, voices weaving around each other rather than pushing to the front. It was a song for nights spent moving without a destination, when time still felt endless. Only years later, after the disappearances, after 1997, did the song take on a different meaning. Its lines began to sound like a farewell no one noticed at the time. A last glance backward, just before the horizon truly shifted. That is why Shifting Horizons opens the album today. Not because it explains what follows — but because it captures how normality sounds right before it is lost. ___________________________________________________________ [Intro] [slap bass enters, electronic drums, syncopated electric guitar] [bright synth pads swell] (Shifting horizons…) [Verse 1] [female vocals] Every turn, a different view Reflections move, we drift right through We walk these streets unknown, unseen Floating in the in-between [Pre-Chorus] [vocal harmonies enter] We move, we flow, the world in flow Through the night, the signs will show [Chorus] [full arrangement, driving beat] Horizon shift and we let go, let go, let go, let go Through the skies our spirits rise, rise, rise, rise [vocal ad-libs] (Ooh-ooh) (Ooh-ooh) (Ooh-ooh) (Ah-ah) [Verse 2] [bass continues, guitar scratching] Passing shapes, reflections play Guiding us along the way In the dark, the answers show Signs of what is coming through [Pre-Chorus] [vocal harmonies] Through the night we see the signs Floating free beyond the lines Whispers call, the winds will show Where the rivers of tomorrow flow [Guitar Solo] [clean electric guitar with wah-wah effect, percussive strumming] [cowbell accents] [Chorus] Horizon shift and we let go, let go, let go, let go Through the skies our spirits rise, rise, rise, rise Horizon shift, we don't hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on Still we drift, still we rise, changing shapes before our eyes [vocal ad-libs] (Ooh-ooh) (Ooh-ooh) (Ooh-ooh) (Ah-ah) [Outro] [synth pads fade] Shifting horizons [slap bass riff] Shifting horizons [vocal chops] Shifting horizons [final drum hit]
