“We Get By” was the last song I made for this album, and is perhaps the oddest 2 minutes on the whole album! The combination of electric piano and synthetic drums on top of this circus-y bass line, plus some really bizarre horn-like stuff man… It’s weird even before dude starts screaming the lyrics. Actually the vocals are definitely a highlight for me, the way it goes from almost spoken delivery to falsetto to passionate yelling is really cool. And initially I really didn’t like the end, the first end I got at first with this but there was something there, so with Studio and pitch hacking with Adjust Speed I basically forced a super weird key change dubstep drop and now I love it. Especially with it being kind of self-referential with the line about the song with the coda with a guy yelling. It’s also another one where some of the lyrics are silly, like the little dogwoods pun, but then the chorus and ending are really honest feeling and reflections that kinda hit your heart.
