Darkness All My Own
The storm blows across the river I am waiting on the other side The clouds ahead grow dark and deeper The wind keeps just one step behind I turn the dial until the station plays A song I’d heard many years ago I feel the rain fall on my windshield I hear a hard wind begin to blow In just the moments that it takes For the coming clouds to force me home I reach for a light to start shining As I drive into a darkness all my own Darkness and music take the wheel I am the passenger without a choice The curves ahead are breaths of silence As the two become my only voice The highway disappears in front of me I don’t know how many miles I need to drive I don’t know if someone will be waiting At the end of this long and lonely ride Static turns the music into blank noise But it’s the only comfort I can find Looking through this pounding downpour For the nearest exit or closest road sign In just the moments that it takes To call up the memories of going home I hold tight to the wheel and steer ahead Into a darkness that is now all my own
