Upside-Down Illusion

V6

Paint the roses, mark the cards Know your place and know the guards Small is small and tall is tall Question nothing, that's the law Off with her head for asking why Off with her head for looking twice Off with her head for standing still Off with her head because I will [RED QUEEN] Who decides? [ALICE] You say you do. [RED QUEEN] Who defines? [ALICE] The rules define you. [RED QUEEN] Who are you? [ALICE] You asked me that before. [RED QUEEN] Then answer! [ALICE] I don't know anymore. WHO DECIDES? Who is mad and who is wise? WHO DECIDES? WHO DECIDES? Who gets crowned and who survives? You can paint the roses red, You can fill the court with lies, But a crown does not make truth And a verdict does not make right. I followed every crooked sign And borrowed clocks that weren't mine I drank the bottle, ate the cake And changed myself for every shape I listened when the Rabbit cried I watched the flowers choose a side I heard the Caterpillar ask And wore the Hatter's broken mask But every door I tried to fit Was built to make me smaller in it Who am I? The question stays. Who decides? Not all the same. If every rule can change its face Then maybe I can choose my place. You think imagination makes you free? Then imagination answers to me! I built the court, I wrote the game I gave the cards their little names Every road returns to my throne Every question has one answer alone You call it madness, I call it control A proper little world with a proper little role The Court Calls Void | [ticking clock | low cello/ deep male vocals] [RED QUEEN] You there. From the other Wonderland. Step forward. [VOID] Which way? [RED QUEEN] Forward! [VOID] Over in mine, every way goes forward eventually. [RED QUEEN] Who rules your court? [VOID] Nobody that I've met. [RED QUEEN] Then who decides? [VOID] Depends who's asking. [RED QUEEN] What happens to those who disobey? [VOID] We hotbox the lair Till Absolem opens a smoky door. [RED QUEEN] That wasn't the question. [VOID] Over in mine, Questions don't always get answers. [RED QUEEN] What of time? [VOID] Dosed it. Watched reality warp. Time is an illusion In an eternal moment we spin. [RED QUEEN] And your Hatter? [VOID] I'd rather sit and drink tea With the Mads Hatter, Where the clocks are full of butter, They leak And the floorboards creak. [RED QUEEN] Enough! What became of your Queen? [VOID] My Red Queen? [RED QUEEN] YES. Your Red Queen. [VOID] Oh. I dosed her with LSD. [RED QUEEN] You WHAT? [VOID] Now she walks around With a vial on her neck And doesn't care What people think. [VOID] You wanna meet her? [THE RECLAIMED RED QUEEN ENTERS | deep regal female vocal | slow psychedelic bass pulse] [RECLAIMED RED QUEEN] You called? [RED QUEEN] Who the hell are you? [RECLAIMED RED QUEEN] I was you. Built my walls from panic, Put the guards around the gate, Called my fear protection, Called my anger royal fate. Screamed "Off with their heads!" Till the whole damn court went still, Thought a crown meant I was right Just because I had the will. Then this psychonaut showed up With a vial and some tea, Sat there calm while every wall Came crashing down through me. I saw the guards were frightened, Saw the throne was built from dread, Saw the war I'd kept alive Was mostly living in my head. [RED QUEEN] He drugged you into weakness! [RECLAIMED RED QUEEN] No. He let me see myself. I didn't lose my madness. I just learned where it belongs. I still guard the outer kingdom, I just don't rule it when I'm wrong. White King keeps the water moving, I can finally take my rest, And when something needs defending Trust me, darling, I'm still dressed. [VIAL CLINK] Now I wear this round my neck Instead of iron on my head. Funny how I stopped demanding Everybody else be dead. [RED QUEEN] You surrendered your crown?! [RECLAIMED RED QUEEN] Nah. I stopped needing it. [RECLAIMED RED QUEEN] Void... Pour her some fucking tea. I'll dose it with crystal LSD [RED QUEEN] Off with her head! [ALICE] Which head? [RED QUEEN] The one that asks! [ALICE] The one that thinks? [RED QUEEN] The one that doubts! [ALICE] The one that dreams? [RED QUEEN] The one that disobeys! [ALICE] Then keep it [ALICE] I think I'll keep them all. WHO DECIDES? WHO DECIDES? Not the crown and not the cards. WHO DECIDES? WHO DECIDES? Not the clock and not the guards. Logic has its place to stand, Imagination has its wings, I don't have to choose just one To understand what either brings. Step through the looking glass, the reflection is clear Waking from the dream, letting go of the fear Although disappointed that the world wasn't real I carry all the lessons and the things that I feel Imagination and creativity help me grow I'm not in such a hurry for the things I don't know When the day becomes the night and the sky becomes a sea When the clock strikes heavy and there's no time for tea In our darkest hour, before my final rhyme The door will open back to Wonderland in time
