[Verse 1] When we get near the house Finbar looks back at us “Be quiet,” he says so low “Don’t let the neighbors hear” He keeps us tucked in shadow His hand tight on the gate Then I see the corner sign And my whole chest changes [Pre-Chorus] That street name hits me first Then the porch with the red chair I know this block by heart I know we’re almost there [Chorus] We used to live close We used to live close Right across the same blocks Same front steps, same old ghosts We used to live close We used to live close I point it out to Loretta And she lights up, she lights up (lights up) [Verse 2] I say, “Loretta, look” And she leans in fast Like a match to dry grass Like she’s been waiting “Girl, this is your side” She says, eyes wide open “And mine is just one street over” Like the map just woke up [Pre-Chorus] Finbar keeps us hushed But the air feels softer now Like every fence and mailbox Knows what we’re talking about [Chorus] We used to live close We used to live close Right across the same blocks Same front steps, same old ghosts We used to live close We used to live close I point it out to Loretta And she lights up, she lights up (lights up) [Bridge] Now the windows hold my past In their little yellow squares And Loretta starts to grin Like she can taste the air Maybe it’s nothing Maybe it’s everything But that little piece of us Still lives on the same street [Final Chorus] We used to live close We used to live close Right across the same blocks Same front steps, same old ghosts We used to live close We used to live close I point it out to Loretta And she lights up, she lights up (lights up) We used to live close We used to live close And for one bright second We’re back where we belong
