[Verse 1] Saw your boots by the door Red mud on the heel Your name on the note Folded under the wheel Mama’s old truck Still smells like rain You left it all here But the hurt stayed the same [Pre-Chorus] I traced that dent On the old tailgate You said, “Hold on” But it came too late [Chorus] Tailgate rust, and a broken trust That’s what’s left of us Tailgate rust, and a broken trust It still cuts like dust (Still cuts like dust) [Verse 2] I passed that diner Off Highway Nine Where you laughed so hard You spilled your wine Now the same red chair Sits by the wall And I swear your ghost Comes when the screen door calls [Pre-Chorus] I hear your boots On the porch again Then the whole damn house Turns back to when [Chorus] Tailgate rust, and a broken trust That’s what’s left of us Tailgate rust, and a broken trust It still cuts like dust (Still cuts like dust) [Bridge] I should’ve seen it When you went quiet Love don’t heal right When you starve it and hide it So I lift my chin And I let you go Like smoke off a field In a Sunday glow [Chorus] Tailgate rust, and a broken trust That’s what’s left of us Tailgate rust, and a broken trust It still cuts like dust (Still cuts like dust) [Outro] Red mud, cold steel And a tired old road Some things fade slow Some never let go
