TIME 007 – The Children of Tomorrow | The Time Machine
(Verse 1) The Eloi came like children through the gardens bright and green, With gentle eyes and graceful forms unlike the men he'd seen. They gathered round the Traveller without a trace of fear, And welcomed him with laughter as they softly ventured near. (Verse 2) Their faces seemed untroubled by the burdens men had known, No mark of toil or hunger in the lives that they had grown. No labour bent their bodies and no conflict scarred the land, They moved through ease and plenty as if guided by one hand. (Chorus) The children of tomorrow lived beneath a kindly sky, Where want and war seemed vanished and no sorrow lingered nigh. To him they seemed the outcome of a world made free from pain, A race beyond the cruelties that once had ruled man's reign. (Verse 3) They spoke with simple voices and they laughed at passing things, Content beneath the sunlight with the comfort that it brings. No engines drove their labours and no markets shaped their days, Their lives appeared like leisure in the warmth of endless May. (Verse 4) He wondered if the future had at last outgrown the fight, If mankind had perfected life and cast aside the night. Perhaps the long advancement of the ages had been kind, And left behind a gentler and more beautiful mankind. (Chorus) The children of tomorrow lived beneath a kindly sky, Where want and war seemed vanished and no sorrow lingered nigh. To him they seemed the outcome of a world made free from pain, A race beyond the cruelties that once had ruled man's reign. (Bridge) Yet something in their sweetness seemed too fragile to be strong, As though a world without a need had shaped them all too long. Their beauty held no hardness and their laughter held no weight, But still he saw perfection in the face of human fate. (Outro) The Traveller watched the Eloi in the fading afternoon, While flowers stirred around them underneath the rising moon. He thought the earth had conquered all the suffering of before, And found in these soft children what mankind had struggled for.
