Hush the Stars (Remastered)

[Verse 1 - lone voice, low and old] When the stars went dim in Kamea and the sea climbed up the stone When the mountains rang like iron bells and the sun no longer shone When the wells spat smoke at morning and the birds fell from the sky The old ones say the world cried out but no one heard it cry [Pre-Chorus - marching, many tired voices] Ash in the morning Blood in the rain Someone held the dark back Someone paid the pain [Chorus - low warrior chant] Hold the candle Bar the night Hush the stars But keep them bright If the sky should split again If the old wound opens wide Sing the name we lost back then and keep the children inside [Verse 2] Some say she was a fire witch with lightning in her hair Some say she was a temple girl who vanished into prayer Some say she was a silver queen who married death and flame Some say she was no one at all because no one knows her name [Pre-Chorus] Ash in the morning Blood in the rain Someone held the dark back Someone paid the pain [Chorus] Hold the candle Bar the night Hush the stars But keep them bright If the sky should split again If the old wound opens wide Sing the name we lost back then and keep the children inside [Verse 3 - heavier] The wound gave birth to thunder The thunder learned to see Blue lights danced in broken hills and fed on memory So shut the doors at sundown Do not praise the storm For lightning wears a hungry face and cold things can look warm [Pre-Chorus] Ash in the morning Blood in the rain Someone held the dark back Someone paid the pain [Chorus] Hold the candle Bar the night Hush the stars But keep them bright If the sky should split again If the old wound opens wide Sing the name we lost back then and keep the children inside [Verse 4 - women and shin] They say she took the fire from men and hid it in the daughters She bound the bright in women’s blood and drowned the rest in waters So when a girl begins to burn do not curse her hand Take her where the gold walls rise and teach her how to stand [Bridge - reverent] Do not ask what saved us Do not ask what bled Do not count the missing Do not wake the dead Some songs are for remembering And some songs are for sleep Some doors are only holy while the dark stays underneath [Pre-Chorus - many voices joining] Ash in the morning Blood in the rain Someone held the dark back Someone paid the pain Ash in the morning Blood in the rain Someone held the dark back Someone paid the pain [Final Chorus - stronger, boots and drums] Hold the candle Bar the night Hush the stars But keep them bright If the sky should split again If the old wound opens wide Sing the name we lost back then and keep the children inside Hold the candle Bar the night Pass the ember Guard the light If the storm should learn your name If the blue death comes to call Sing for her who held the wound and gave tomorrow all [Outro - lullaby fading] No one saw her face there No one heard her name But morning came with ash in it and still the lightning came Hold this candle Bar the night Hush now, child And keep it bright
