I saw a grandma at the piano, With generations gathered near. A picture of the life I'd dreamed of Since my own childhood years. And once again, that old familiar sorrow Came to visit me that night— For all the things that life had changed, And dreams I couldn't make turn out right. I found a place to talk it through, A thinking partner by my side, Who listened, asked, reflected back The feelings I held inside. We talked about the dreams I'd carried, The different paths that life can take, And I could let myself feel sorrow Without believing it was a mistake. I went back home and wrote the story, Of losing that same dream again. I put the feelings into lyrics, And let the music carry them. The dream was still the dream I'd cherished, The past was still what it had been— But I no longer had to hold That sorrow quite so deep within. I gave the pain somewhere else to live, A melody to call its own. I didn't have to lose the truth, I simply gave that grief a home. I gave the sorrow words and music, A place to put what I'd been through— And when my heart released its burden, It made room for something new. Then waking in the arms of someone Who makes my life a dream come true. I thought about how much I loved him, And all the joy we've journeyed through. Then suddenly a thought came rushing, A truth I hadn't seen before— He wasn't alone in living beyond his dreams— I, too, had been given so much more! I, too, had been given so much more! I'd gone to bed still grieving A dream I thought I'd lost, But woke to find I was living it— Just not the way I'd thought. The love was real, the dream was living, The years had brought me here— The dream I'd thought was over Had been growing all these years. This Marriage Counts! I gave the sorrow somewhere else to live, Making room for something new. The blessings hadn't just appeared, They'd been there all along, it's true. The night before I felt deep sorrow, But morning brought a different light— I hadn't changed a single chapter, I Just gave my heart space for new insight. I went to bed grieving a dream I thought I'd lost along the way. I woke up in his arms, already living it— Nothing changed, but I saw my life differently that day.
