The Kingdoms of the World - Mid-Evil Music(Luke 4:5–7)
[Verse I] Upon a mountain, cold and high, Beneath a blood-red evening sky, A shadowed prince beside Him stood, Where stone met cloud and ancient wood. He raised his hand toward lands below, Where candle fires began to glow, “Behold the kingdoms, far and wide, Their crowns, their riches, and their pride.” [Chorus] Come, take the kingdoms of the Earth, Their golden crowns, their royal worth, Their towers high, their banners unfurled, Their armies marching through the world. Bow but once, and they are thine— The throne, the scepter, and the shrine. But One alone shall have the crown: The Lord who casts the darkness down. [Verse II] “The nations pass beneath my hand, The kings obey throughout the land. Their silver coins, their fields of grain, Their ships that cross the midnight rain. Their mighty halls, their jeweled doors, Their trumpets ringing through their courts— All these kingdoms I can give, If only thou wilt bow and live.” [Chorus] Come, take the kingdoms of the Earth, Their golden crowns, their royal worth, Their towers high, their banners unfurled, Their armies marching through the world. Bow but once, and they are thine— The throne, the scepter, and the shrine. But One alone shall have the crown: The Lord who casts the darkness down. [Bridge — quiet, almost spoken] But Jesus answered, calm and still, “No crown is bought by bending will. No kingdom gained through Satan's hand Can stand forever in this land. The Lord thy God alone shall reign; Before His name, all pride is vain.” [Verse III] The mountain wind began to rise, The darkness gathered in the skies. The tempter's cloak began to fade, His promises became a shade. For earthly thrones may rise and fall, And marble kingdoms turn to dust; But Heaven's King shall judge them all, And every crown return to Him. [Final Chorus] No, take not kingdoms bought by lies, Nor chase the glory that soon dies. The golden crown, the jeweled throne, Belong to God and God alone. Though darkness walks the mortal land, Its hour is measured by His hand. The kingdoms rise, the kingdoms fall— But God shall reign above them all. [Outro — lute and recorder] The mountain sleeps beneath the moon, The night grows still, the night grows soon. The tempter walks into the night— And dawn appears beyond the height.
