It’s the study of the person, from the "Cradle" to the "Grave," And the "Professional Standards" that we’re bound to behave. It’s not just "being kind" or a "helping hand" to a friend, It’s a clinical framework on which millions depend. You’ve got to know the Life Stages, the timeline of the soul, And how different "Factors" play a massive control. Let’s start with the P-I-E-S, the acronym of the heart, The four different ways that a person can start. Physical is the body, the growth and the height, Intellectual is the mind and the "thinking" getting bright. Emotional is the feeling, the "self-concept" and the "stress," And Social is the "Relationships" that help us through the mess. From "Infancy" to "Early Years," through "Adolescence" too, To the "Older Adult" years where the "Physical" can subdue. Now look at the Life Events, the "Expected" and the "New," The things that can change a person's point of view. Starting school or a marriage—that’s an "Expected" turn, But a "Redundancy" or "Illness" is a harder lesson to learn. You’ve got to know how we Cope, the "Resilience" we find, And the "Formal" and "Informal" support for the mind. Is it a "Family member" (Informal) giving you the "Care"? Or a "Doctor" or "Social Worker" (Formal) who is there? Now hit the Care Values, the "Holy Grail" of the ward, The rules that make sure that no patient is ignored. Empowerment is the key—giving the "Choice" back to them, Treating every individual like a unique little gem. Maintaining Confidentiality—the "Need to Know" rule, Keeping secrets locked tight like a professional tool. Preserving Dignity and Effective Communication too, And "Safeguarding" the vulnerable in everything you do. You’ve got to know the Barriers, the things in the way, That stop a person getting help on a difficult day. Is it "Geographical"—are they living too far? Or "Financial"—can they afford the bus or the car? Maybe it’s "Psychological"—the fear or the shame, Or a "Language" barrier that’s complicating the game. A good "Care Provider" must break these walls down, To ensure "Equality" for everyone in the town. Finally, the Legislation, the "Acts" and the "Law," The "Safety Net" that we’ve mentioned before. The Equality Act (2010)—the "Protected" nine, Making sure that "Discrimination" is way out of line. And the Care Act, and the Children Act too, The "Legal Foundations" for everything you do. It’s about "Redressing the Balance" and "Meeting the Need," Taking the "Person-Centered" approach as the ultimate creed.
