The Old Church on the Mountain
There’s an old church on the mountain, Where the winding road runs high, With a steeple leaning slightly Toward the Carolina sky. The windows all are broken, And the paint is worn away, But I swear I hear the singing When the evening starts to fade. [Chorus] Oh, that old church on the mountain, Though its doors are closed today, Still reminds me of the Savior And the old familiar way. They may never ring the bell again, Or fill those wooden pews, But the Gospel that was spoken there Will never lose its truth. [Verse 2] There’s a Bible on the pulpit, Covered softly now with dust, And a faded wooden cross there Where they learned in Whom to trust. I can almost hear the preacher Calling sinners down the aisle, And the ladies in the choir Singing Heaven with a smile. [Female Backing Voices] Ooh… singing Heaven with a smile… [Chorus] Oh, that old church on the mountain, Though its doors are closed today, Still reminds me of the Savior And the old familiar way. They may never ring the bell again, Or fill those wooden pews, But the Gospel that was spoken there Will never lose its truth. [Big Band Instrumental Break – Trombone, Trumpet, Saxophone, Piano & Clean Guitar] [Verse 3] Some who worshipped there are sleeping In the graveyard down below, With their names upon the headstones And the dates from long ago. But they trusted in the promise That the grave is not the end, For the Lord who rose on Sunday Will come calling once again. [Bridge – Male Lead with Female Harmony] And when that trumpet sounds from Heaven, And the saints rise from the ground, There’ll be singing on that mountain Like the sweetest big-band sound. Every old forgotten chapel, Every soul that knew His name, Will rejoice before the Savior— Jesus Christ forever reigns. [Final Chorus – Full Big Band & Female Backing Trio] Oh, that old church on the mountain, Though its doors are closed today, Still reminds me of the Savior And the old familiar way. They may never ring the bell again, Or fill those wooden pews, But the Gospel that was spoken there Will never lose its truth. [Outro – Brass Swell, Piano, Soft Female “Oohs”] The old church may be silent, But the message still remains— Jesus Christ is risen, And forever He shall reign.
