——————- (English translation of the original Russian poem “Страшный сон”) ✦ Poem by Tatiyana Toutok ✦ 𝓣𝓮𝓻𝓻𝓲𝓫𝓵𝓮 𝓓𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓶 Dark, grim, empty, ruined… It has haunted me again. Once more, it tore my soul apart With its coldness in my dream. In the chimney flues, the dreadful wind howled, My blood ran cold with fear. I bit my lips in my sleep, And screamed out again and again… I tossed and turned upon my pillow, Moaning as if in delirium. Who will destroy those walls Between which I walk? The snowdrift, like white powder, Covered all my tracks. My God, when will morning come? Let there be no harm, I beg. And the moon, like a serpent’s eye, Peers through holes in the ceiling. And a creeping shadow, a vile thing, With a whip of leather in its hand. My legs fill with lead, As if for the first time — once again. And in the end, it will catch me — There is no running from it. A blow… again… and again. Angel, where are you? Save me! I’m not ready to surrender: Take me to the light! Take me to the light! In these grim dungeons, I refuse to languish — Better poison, better a potion, Better straight to the executioner! To listen to the clanging bolts again, Someone’s groans, cries, and wails… It’s a bit drier here in the corner. Come on! Bring your sword, executioner! The scaffold is roughly built, The planks creak mournfully… But my lips tremble in a smile — I saw you! You stand among the crowd and guards, They won’t let you near. Well, let them. I am beautiful even in ashes. Even in rags — look at me!… That’s it. The executioner calmly Wipes the blood off his sword: “At least one went with dignity, Without whining or screaming.” Warm hands — you’re near… And my head is still on my shoulders. Waking up is a reward. It means I’m still alive! The castle, where my soul was executed — I will tear it down, erase it, Destroy it to the foundation And scatter it in the wind. It’s over now. I will forget. Don’t remind me, don’t you dare. There, love once lived… it seems… Yes — yours. But not for me.
