07 Music of Molecules / The Boundary Between Non-Life and Life
The definition of life is relatively clear. There are three fundamental criteria: 1. Being an individual enclosed by a membrane (having a container), 2. Carrying out metabolism (the acquisition and use of energy), 3. The ability to self-replicate (to leave offspring). Additional characteristics include the capacity to evolve, to grow, to respond to stimuli, and to maintain homeostasis. NASA further defines life as a self-sustaining chemical system capable of undergoing Darwinian evolution. Put simply, the boundary between life and non-life lies in whether or not something is a “cell.” By this definition, viruses — which cannot replicate on their own without parasitizing another cell — are not considered life. Atoms consist of protons and neutrons in the nucleus, surrounded by electrons distributed in probabilistic orbitals described by the Schrödinger equation. There is no trace of “life” at this level. However, as molecules become larger and form macromolecules, they begin to exhibit complex functions that resemble those of living systems.
